David Fincher’s Fight Club is finally set to be released on 4K Ultra HD next week, but it appears the director has been making some small changes to the film. But I can’t imagine that will be a big deal, as cinema fans are incredibly forgiving when it comes to changing classic movies. Right? Right??
What’s Changed?
According to the Men on Film Pod account on X, it seems that Marla’s (Helena Bonham Carter) skin has been cleaned up of slight blemishes, which is a change I don’t quite understand. It seems fitting that Marla wouldn’t have flawless skin, and, you know, humans get zits. The scene also features an alteration to the prescription on the bottle of Xanax; the previous version was 300mg, and the new version is 0.5mg.
Another scene also includes a digital lens flare added to a flashlight. And of course, you’ll also notice that the colour timing has been changed to a cooler, darker look, at least in certain scenes. Other images I’ve seen are roughly the same colour timing as the old Blu-ray, while some are actually slightly warmer. You can also see other types of alterations, such as eliminating reflections from glasses, adding city lights in the background, and removing additional blemishes for Marla. Once more people have their hands on the 4K disc, we’ll likely see more examples of Fincher’s tinkering.
Fight Club on 4K
According to the press release, the film has been “meticulously restored in 4K Ultra HD,” with the presentation set to bring “renewed intensity and clarity to Fincher’s uncompromising vision, enhancing the film’s striking cinematography and immersive sound design for both longtime fans and first-time viewers.“
