DC‘s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is currently in production, aiming for a July 9, 2027 theatrical release – and with cameras rolling, Deadline has learned that Matthew Lillard has joined the cast! Lillard is fresh off a multi-episode role in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, where he played CIA agent Mr. Charles, so he’s basically moving directly over from Marvel to DC to work on Man of Tomorrow. Details on the role he’s playing have not been revealed.

Who’s returning for the Superman sequel?

Man of Tomorrow finds James Gunn returning as the sequel’s director and writer, with a story that sees Superman and Lex Luthor matching wits and might with the villain Brainiac, played by German actor Lars Eidinger.

Production for Man of Tomorrow is taking place in Atlanta, with several cast members from the original film returning, including David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher.

Others expected to return are Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Maria Gabriella de Faria as The Engineer.

Who else is in the cast?

Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, will be reprising that role in Man of Tomorrow.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Adria Arjona (Hit Man) has been cast in a role that’s believed to be Maxima, the warrior queen from the planet Almerac.

Maxima was first introduced in the pages of Action Comics #645 in 1990, when she arrived on Earth in search of a suitable mate and quickly set her sights on Superman. Created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez, “the character is depicted at various times in DC’s comics as an antagonist, ally, and would-be love interest to Superman.” The character was featured the series Smallville and Supergirl, where she was played by Charlotte Sullivan and Eve Torres Gracie, respectively. The character was also in Superman: The Animated Series and other animated projects, but has never been depicted in a live-action DC film.
