Earlier this week, in our box office predictions, we noted that Michael, in its fourth week of release, could moonwalk back to first place this weekend, even if we called it for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Based on the early numbers from Deadline, we made the wrong call, as Michael is now looking like it will easily win the weekend, with it grossing a big $27 million. That’s pretty huge considering it’s in its fourth week of release, with it now closing in on $300 million (it’s at $283 million). How high will this go? $350 million seems likely – but it’s not out of the question that it could hit $400 million domestic, with it also looking at a foreign gross that will certainly hit $800 million – maybe more – which are Bohemian Rhapsody numbers.
As for number two, The Devil Wears Prada 2 doesn’t have too much competition, with it on track for just over $20 million and a $177 million cume. Sadly, Mortal Kombat II is looking at a huge second-week decline, with it likely to take about $13 million. It will be beaten by Curry Barker’s buzzy horror flick Obsession (catch our interview with Curry and the cast HERE), which is on track for a terrific $14 million. One thing worth noting is the incredible A-minus CinemaScore, which is rare for horror. This is the same kind of score Weapons achieved, so it’s possible word of mouth may drive this to very consistent box office over the next few weeks.
As expected, Black Bear’s Guy Ritchie movie, In the Grey, is tanking. Despite the star teaming of Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, it’s only looking at about $3 million, and it will be trounced by the re-release of Top Gun, which will take about $4.7 million. I actually caught the re-release here at the Cannes Film Festival on the beach. Check it out:
