The Duffer Brothers, better known as the creative duo behind Netflix‘s Stranger Things, are heading to theaters with their first theatrical film, and now we know when it’s all going down. According to reports, Paramount is releasing the team’s “event film” on November 3, 2028. There are no further details about the project because, of course, it’s lurking within the shadows before the Duffers are ready to present their next big idea. What we do know is that the Duffers will direct the feature from their own script.
The deal with Paramount
In August 2025, following the massive and continued success of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers inked a four-year exclusive film, TV, and streaming deal with Paramount. The deal follows hot on the heels of David Ellison’s Paramount-Skydance merger, which is now going through. Ellison sees the deal with the Duffers as another way to boost Paramount’s reputation as the go-to studio for top-tier entertainment in the years to come.
Why did the Duffers move to Paramount?
While the Duffers enjoyed a seat near the head of Netflix’s table for several years, the duo signed with Paramount out of a desire to break into the feature film market. Recently, Netflix made it clear that the studio will go out of its way to work with directors who are cool with releasing their films on the streaming platform, forgoing a theatrical release. Exceptions apply to filmmakers like Greta Gerwig and David Fincher. Still, after their respective films hit the silver screen, Netflix is eager to produce more modestly budgeted features exclusively for its in-home platform.
