After breaking every box office record last weekend with its $360 million opening, the results are starting to pour in for the film’s second frame. While its $145 million take is just slightly below the $150 million gross we predicted, it’s still the third-biggest second weekend of all time, just behind Avengers: Endgame’s $147.38 million and Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $149.2 million. That’s a 60% decline from last weekend, which is unavoidable given the huge opening.
Spider-Man Dominates as The Odyssey Hits Another Milestone
This is actually the first time a Sony film has ever cleared $100 million in its second weekend, with it dwarfing the previous record-holder, Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $84.5 million. Globally, the movie has made an absolutely incredible $1.67 BILLION — and domestically it’s at $655 million.
And, of course, that’s not Holland’s only appearance in the top 10, with his co-starring role in The Odyssey easily taking second place with $31.5 million and a $461 million domestic haul. It’s now Christopher Nolan’s second-highest-grossing film at the domestic box office of all time, ahead of The Dark Knight Rises and behind The Dark Knight’s $534.9 million — a total it’s sure to top within a few weeks. Overseas, at $1.1 billion, it’s already Nolan’s highest grosser.
One Night Only and Super Troopers 3 Struggle
The rom-com One Night Only landed with a bit of a thud, making $5.7 million, which isn’t far off from how director Will Gluck’s Anyone But You opened. That movie ended up having great legs, but it seems doubtful this will manage the same trick, with many thinking the high-concept premise, where premarital sex is illegal, is too much for audiences to get over.
Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers 3 took $4 million for fourth place, which is a poor showing considering the last movie made over $15 million in its opening. The top five was rounded out by Toy Story 5, with $3.9 million and a $470 million domestic total — the third-best of the year so far.
Minions and Monsters and Moana Continue to Slide
Minions and Monsters continued its mediocre run with $3.5 million and a $176 million total, which is far below the franchise usual grosses, although it will still turn a very nice profit. Moana continued to crash and burn, with the $250 million movie making $2.8 million for a $121.4 million domestic total.
Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man Fails to Find an Audience
Probably the poorest performance this week went to Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man, which only made $2 million on over 1,600 screens. That’s a shame, as Roth is trying something unique with his company, The Horror Section, but audiences didn’t bite — perhaps it was a mistake putting it out during the summer.
The Invite and CatVideoFest Round Out the Top 10
Olivia Wilde’s The Invite continued its second run, adding $717K to its $24.2 million haul. Tenth place was rounded out by the annual CatVideoFest, which played on only 255 screens, once or twice a day, but still pulled in a big enough audience to hit the charts.
