Marvel Studios re-released Avengers: Endgame last week, with the Encore addition containing a few minutes of new footage to help tie it into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. While chatting with Empire, directors Anthony and Joe Russo broke down the new ending and teased just how important the new scenes will be to Doomsday.
Avengers: Endgame Encore Ending
The original ending of Avengers: Endgame found Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) reuniting in the past and dancing in their home. A sweet ending for a character who had to give up so much. But the new ending picks up immediately after that moment, with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) interrupting their bliss to say he can help both of them.
“We really thought about that ending [in Endgame] as the perfect ending for Steve Rogers,” Anthony said. “And the idea of just going one moment past that perfect ending, and thinking about how radically that moment can change by just taking one step past it… That was a big part of the delight in the new idea for what Doomsday is and where the story goes.“
Joe added, “Yeah. The Marvel Universe is a giant experiment, and has been for years. I think part of the fun of coming back was, we thought, ‘Could we reach back to pull the story forward?’ And nobody’s done that before. Nobody’s ever had an opportunity to do it before. And this is a fluid universe, right? So you could do it in this universe, and it felt like an interesting way to start the story of Doomsday.“
New Scenes…and Old…Will be Important
Joe teased that the new scenes, which include Dr. Bruce Banner startled by the arrival of Doctor Doom and the TVA watching in horror as the multiverse collapses, are each very important to Doomsday. “Everything is premeditated,” he said. “Every inch of footage that you see has some relevance in some way. There are clues in every piece of that new footage, that can lead you to a greater story in Doomsday.“
Additionally, some scenes from the original cut of Endgame might take on new importance. “I will say this: there are clues in Endgame, things that are said, that will pay off in Doomsday,” Joe said. “So if you want to go back and revisit the movie again – not the new footage but lines that are said in the movie – [there are some] that have an impact on Doomsday.“
The pair also confirmed that the new scenes won’t appear in Doomsday as they were shot specifically for Encore. Avengers: Endgame Encore was a big success, grossing $86 million over the weekend. You can check out a review of Avengers: Endgame Encore from our own Tyler Nichols right here.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18.
