One of the greatest joys of being a physical media collector is when a film you care about gets the five-star treatment. The attention to detail and the upgrade in the film’s quality give you an excuse to bust out your wallet and spend some of your hard-earned cash on a keepsake that could entertain you for years to come. On Tuesday, the Facebook account Dawn of the Discs Official announced that a 4K version of Steven Seagal‘s 1988 action classic, Above the Law, is coming from Toy Robot Video (Arrow Video’s new sub-label).
Set against the cold, gray, blue-collar backdrop of late-80s Chicago, the story introduces us to Nico Toscani (Seagal): a former CIA operative who left the black-ops world behind after seeing the agency’s dark side in Vietnam. Now a vice detective trying to keep his head down and protect his hometown, Nico and his sharp-witted partner, Jax, intercept a massive stash of military-grade C-4 during what should have been a routine drug bust. But instead of getting a commendation, federal authorities immediately swoop in, release the suspects, and order the Chicago PD to scrub the investigation entirely.
Refusing to back off, Nico pulls at the threads and uncovers a massive, rot-at-the-top conspiracy involving a rogue CIA faction led by a sadistic former colleague named Kurt Zagon (Henry Silva). To fund unsanctioned military operations, the group is running international drug-smuggling rings and planning the assassination of an outspoken U.S. Senator. When the corrupt agents try to silence Nico by framing him, stripping his badge, and threatening his family, he goes completely off the grid. Stripped of official authority, he takes to the streets to dismantle the syndicate bone by bone and stop the assassination before time runs out.
Seagal’s Above the Law is considered one of the martial arts master’s best films, alongside titles like Under Siege, Out for Justice, Marked for Death, and Hard to Kill. Headlined by a pristine brand-new 4K scan approved by director Andrew Davis himself, this release packs in fresh commentary, retrospective interviews, and deep-dive extras that physical media enthusiasts won’t want to miss.
