Action Round-Up #44

Hyams talks US3!

This week, the fine folks at VanDammeFans had a chance to sit down with director John Hyams as he talks all sorts of fun stuff regarding UNIVERSAL SOLDIER 3.

What may be most interesting is how he was able to land star Dolph Lundgren back to reprise his roll from the first film. Check it out: When I met DL, he declined, he didn’t want to do it at all, he was not happy with the script, I didn’t think that…Well….. I didn’t disagree with him. I can see why he was not interested. He told me what some of his issues are. I explained some of my ideas for the character reimagining from what was in the original, came up with a new concept. I wrote Dolph’s scenes before anyone elses in the movie, because I met with him and we discussed the character and I had the script re-written and he could check it out. DL said “write the scenes and we will talk”. I felt it was important to have him on board. I sent the scenes to Dolph and through that process, he got the feeling I wanted to do something good and not just in it for the money, not just a pay cheque and I wanted to do something different with it and I wanted something interesting from his character.

Nice to see some more thought was put into the script to bring Dolph on board, so hopefully that means the overall movie will be of the highest STD quality. We can only hope. Either way, I don’t know a single person out there who isn’t excited to see Dolph and Van Damme butting heads and kicking each others’ asses again. Enjoy the interview, and get ready for UNIVERSAL SOLDIER 3 on DVD sometime early next year.

Dolph in new CONAN???

Last week Dolph Lundgren dropped by The AITH Podcast to talk about COMMAND PERFORMANCE. He also dropped by MTV, where he dished a little teaser regarding his possible invovlement in the next Marcus Nispel directed CONAN film.

I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for CONAN…

Hells yeah! For the new CONAN to be legit, they better have a veteran action hero up in the mix, and having Dolph along for the ride may be what the doctor ordered (as obviously Arnold Schwarzenegger is too busy governing).

While he goes on to say that nothing will be official until sometime next year, the fact that he brought it up at all is saying something. I could give a crap about the CONAN remake–but if Dolph’s on board, I can see my interest intensifying quite a bit. Bring on the Dolph!

From Paris with Love posters!

I haven’t been on board the upcoming action/comedy FROM PARIS WITH LOVE yet, but these two new posters may have changed my mind. Not that I don’t dig on the premise, but John Travolta all chrome-dome doesn’t rub me the right way. It’s kinda weird. But these posters are pretty dope, so I may have to give it a try…

As a refresher… A low-ranking intelligence operative (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) working in the office of the U.S. Ambassador in France takes on more than he bargained for when he partners with a wisecracking, fast-shooting, high-ranking U.S. agent (John Travolta) who’s been sent to Paris to stop a terrorist attack.

You can check out the trailer below and decide for yourself. Real action, or action comedy in the form of RUSH HOUR? Hard to say at this point, but the action itself looks quite impressive. And the blood-splattered posters are pretty cool too… FROM PARIS WITH LOVE hits theaters Feburary 5, 2010.

Revenge Teasers!

A good, gritty, grindhouse-style revenge flick called REVENGE IS HER MIDDLE NAME came to our attention this week, and I think you’ll get a kick out of it. It’s from New Zealander Anthony Matthews, and as the press release explains, Matthews has a lifetime of horror, cult, and exploitation films pumping through his veins, and is aiming to make a film that has the touch of ’70s and ’80s era exploitation cinema. Hell yeah.

So what’s this badboy all about? Check it: Kat (Lissa Brennan), a drug addicted prostitute, has hit rock bottom. In a desperate attempt to turn her life around, she plans a reckless heist that she hopes will score the money she needs to leave her street life behind. When things spiral out of control, she is confronted by a drug dealing pimp known as Mutton Chop (Douglas Bell). Hellbent on vengeance, the sadistic pimp orders a brutal attack on Kat. Now all she wants is Revenge… And it is her turn to collect!

When there’s pimps involved, you know revenge is not far off! If you head over to the film’s OFFICIAL SITE, you can check out a couple of teaser trailers for the flick and see what the filmmakers have in mind. Looks like some authentic grindhouse shit… and that’s a good thing!

And as an extra kick, here’s a plea from the filmmakers about finishing REVENGE IS HER MIDDLE NAME: Fort Street Entertainment is nearing the end of pre-production, and is currently seeking donations to alleviate the cost of production. Donors’ names will appear in the completed film’s credits, with additional perks depending on the size of the donation. Donations will be used primarily for FX supplies, rental equipment, costumes, and props. Additional funds will be used to get the film into festivals internationally.

Sgt. Rock gets director!

According to THR, mega-producer Joel Silver and other Mega-producer Akiva Goldsman have signed on I AM LEGEND director Francis Lawrence to take on the task of brining DC Comic’s WWII-era superhero SGT. ROCK to the big screen.

Set to be modernized for today’s audience by writer Chad St-John, SGT. ROCK tells of a man with no powers other than his hand cannons as he kicks ass through WWII. The concept is great, the comics speak for themselves, but will the directing/producing/writing team be able to pull it off. I have faith in Silver and Goldsman…. let’s just hope Lawrence brings more to the table than he did with I AM LEGEND.

KICK-ASS Teaser Trailer!

Here it is. The moment you’ve all been waiting for… the official teaser trailer to the most kick-ass sounding movie of 2010… KICK-ASS! I caught an extended trailer at Comic-Con this year, and while the new trailer teases at the awesomeness of that footage, it still holds back a number of money shots. Perfect for a teaser trailer such as this.

Coming at ya from director Matthew Vaughn, and starring Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, and Chloe Moretz, KICK-ASS is about Dave Lizewski, an unnoticed high school student and comic book fan who one day decides to become a super-hero, even though he has no powers, training or meaningful reason to do so.

Sounds like PG fun, but trust me… this flick earns its bloody R rating with enough ass-kicking and bullets flying to put most other action movies to shame. Check out the trailer below, and get ready to KICK-ASS in theaters everywhere April 16, 2010.

Murdock in A-Team?!

According to his OFFICIAL FANSITE, Dwight Schultz, who played ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock in the original A-TEAM series will be making a cameo appearance in the big-screen adaptation starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, and Sharlto Copely.

Here’s the low-down: We are pleased to inform you all that Dwight has actually already been working in Vancouver, where he has played a cameo role in The A-Team movie. Sharlto Copely, the South African actor who plays Murdock, is according to Dwight: ‘brilliant beyond words’. Dwight has seen his screen test and he stated: that honestly, if Sharlto is given an opportunity to do what I saw in that test, “Murdock” will be better than ever!’ Sharlto has been very kind to him on the set and Dwight must say that he has been treated very well.

That’s some awesome effin’ news right there. We all know Copely would do well in the Murdock role, but to have Schultz back him up 100%… well damn, it doesn’t get any better than that. I can’t wait to see this movie! Bring on THE A-TEAM in theaters sometime next year!
