Red Dawn like Call of Duty?
Mary Parent, the Chairperson of MGM, sat down with Risky Business Blog and talked a bit about the upcoming RED DAWN remake. So what’d she have to say that was so interesting? Only that the new RED DAWN will play like a “live action CALL OF DUTY”!
This is based on Parent checking out some footage, and according to her, director Dan Bradley had really outdone himself when it came to the action sequences. If it’s anything like CALL OF DUTY, I think we’re gonna be in for a real treat!
While I’m not a huge gamer, I’ve played a few rounds of CALL OF DUTY, and holy hell is the action epic-fast and uber-intense. Not that that’s necessarily how I saw the updated version of RED DAWN playing out, but I can dig it, yo! RED DAWN hits theaters everywhere November 24, 2010.
CBS with a Vengeance!
According to Variety, CBS Films has just acquired Robert Mark Kamen’s action script VENGEANCE, to be produced by Erwin Stoff (THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL). I’m actually quite sold on the title alone, but if you need more convincing, check this out: Kamen wrote the action heavy revenge flick TAKEN starring Liam Neeson. Now are you excited?
But if you needed even more than that, let’s check out what VENGEANCE is all about… at least, according to Kamen: Basically, it’s a contemporary revenge love story — what happens when violence meets love. The main characters are 20 and Italian, and there are themes that echo films like ‘The Godfather.’ It’s about family loyalty and how much someone owes their family and the past. It’s not set in the gangster milieu but just outside it.
A contemporary revenge love story? From the guy who wrote TAKEN? And maybe a gangster or two? Where can I sign up! Hopefully just because CBS Films picked it up doesn’t mean it’s going to be made for TV or even video… hopefully it’ll have a chance at going theatrical. We shall see. TMU flies with the Birds!
When was the last time you were feigning for some fighter-jet action in a movie? Me neither. But I’m guessing a few of you might into that kind of action, and TMU Pictures is also counting on making that happen as well, as they just announced the action movie WAR BIRDS is now in development.
In a nutshell, WAR BIRDS is about an Air Force veteran-turned-reckless airshow re-enactment pilot gets pulled into the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat.
I’ve heard of the world of underground cage fighting, underground street fighting, and underground street racing, but… aerial combat? Wow. Never in a billion years… which makes me think this flick could be two shades of awesome.
Written by Josh Staman and Bryan Binder, and directed / produced by Michael Chait, filming is set to begin on WAR BIRDS this summer in Michigan using real-life airplanes and using real-life aerial stunt sequences. Depending on how much fighter action, and real-life stunts, WAR BIRDS may be something to keep an eye on… so keep it here for more WAR BIRDS action as we hear it!
Jack Ryan details!
During a recent press conference for INVICTUS, producer Mace Neufeld gave those in attendance a nice treat–the details to the upcoming JACK RYAN film starring Chris Pine. Neufeld confirmed that the film won’t be based on a Tom Clancy novel, but will rather be an original screenplay instead. That’s nice and all… but what’s it gonna be about? Check it:
We pick him up when he’s on Wall Street, [but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They’re kind of ‘thinking man’s thrillers.’ Jack is referred to as a ‘water-walker’ because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That’s very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that’s how we want to portray him. He’s a teacher. He’s a historian. He’s a linguist. And he’s really smart.
Ok, so that’s not much to go on, but there you have it. Better than nothing, I always say. And you know what? This new Jack Ryan almost sounds like one Dr. Indiana Jones. A teacher, a historian… I’m just saying, the similarities are there. Never mind that Harrison Ford played Ryan in PATRIOT GAMES and A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.
That said, with Pine on board, I can’t wait to see where they take the new Jack Ryan. Not an action movie, but a thinking man’s thriller? Whatever you want to call it, if Jack Ryan’s there, I’ll be there too! Bring it!
