Adam McKay planning border patrol comedy with Will Ferrell & John C. Reilly

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Adam McKay is receiving some well-deserved praise with his latest film, THE BIG SHORT, having nabbed Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director. If you were worried that the ANCHORMAN director would now focus on more dramatically-driven stories, you can put those fears to bed. Indie Wire had a few words with the man, and from the sound of it, he’ll be back to his usual hijinx with some familiar faces in no time.

Adam McKay on his next project:

I’m actually talking with [Will] Ferrell and John C. Reilly about doing a comedy about two guys who go down to defend America’s borders against the immigrants, and I’m pretty excited about it. We actually have Jesse Armstrong who wrote IN THE LOOP – [he’s] delivering a draft, I think, next week.

Regarding the hand-held style of THE BIG SHORT:

I was amazed you could get good laughs [with that style]. The theory in comedy is that you have to frame very traditionally so the performance or the logic is what gets the laugh, but I dunno, I’m thinking with this next movie going more handheld than I’ve ever gone.

McKay has always struck me as an intelligent filmmaker and I’ve always enjoyed watching interviews or listening to commentaries with the man. With that said, I’ll watch anything he directs BUT I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want more comedies in the vein of ANCHORMAN or STEP BROTHERS. Having Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as your leads is a hell of a start!
