A&E bringing Psycho prequel to series courtesy of one of the creators of Lost

Hey, do you remember when sequels were good quality like PSYCHO II, III, and IV? Or when remakes were awesome ideas like Gus Van Sant’s 1998 version of PSYCHO? Oh, come on! The Van Sant version added masturbation sounds! That automatically makes a movie better! I know, how about a prequel? Those always work out when sequels don’t!

Carlton Cuse, co-showrunner of LOST along with Damon Lindelof, will be bringing a prequel series to A&E. The show will follow a contemporary exploration of Norman Bates’ formative years. It will explore his relationship with his mother, Norma, and offer a look at the back story that helped forge the famed serial killer. It’s been dubbed as a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville.

BATES MOTEL is the latest film to explore the origins of a serial killer, following in the footsteps of NBC’s upcoming Hannibal Lecter series. I don’t know how much there is actually there to explore regarding Norman Bates’ background. I have the distinct feeling this will follow the format of having a different guest check into the motel each week and almost discover Norman’s secret. If that is what it will be, count me out. We will find out more when the ten episode first season premieres in 2013.
