Al Pacino is no stranger to made-for-cable productions lately, but at least he’s making some intriguing choices (“Angels in America”, YOU DON’T KNOW JACK).
Now according to the NY Times, the screen legend is heading back to HBO to portray Phil Spector, the wacky producer, songwriter and killer best known for his work with Motown acts, The Beatles, and fake hair.
What’s more, the project is being written and directed by David Mamet (GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS), so the dialogue should be almost as good as the expected soundtrack. Barry Levinson, who directed Pacino as Jack “Dr. Death” Kevorkian in HBO’s movie, is also producing.
Spector, who originated the “Wall of Sound” producing style, recently received a 19-to-life prison sentence for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.
The project is still early in the works, but it’s safe to assume it will look at Spector’s more recent turmoil and trial.
