UPDATE: Deadline reports that Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson, best known for her recent lead on the Starz series THE WHITE QUEEN, has joined MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 in the female lead previously offered to Jessica Chastain.

Alec Baldwin is currently weighing whether or not he wants to accept the impossible mission of being supervisor to the notoriously troublesome Ethan Hunt. Baldwin is apparently in talks to take on a role in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 for director Christopher McQuarrie.

Variety claims the role being offered to Baldwin is similar in nature to Laurence Fishburne‘s turn in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III. The question remains how significant the role will be. But, regardless of the size, Baldwin will likely knock it out of the park. The actor has segued in the last decade to more of a comedic actor with his role as Jack Donaghy on 30 ROCK and various SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE appearances, but the man who was THE SHADOW has also delivered dramatic performances in films like Martin Scorsese‘s THE DEPARTED.

As of now, it is unknown who else will be starring in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 aside from Cruise. It is widely assumed that Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner, and Ving Rhames would return but nothing has been confirmed regarding the secretive project. For now, we have to assume this is going to be bigger than Brad Bird‘s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL in every possible way.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 is slated to open on December 25, 2015.
