Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Amazon Studios has officially subscribed to Paper Girls for a television adaptation of co-creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang's best-selling sci-fi comic book series!

News of the series commitment hit digital newstands on Friday via Deadline, who said that I have Legendary Television and Plan B to thank for this exciting announcement. As per the deal, TOY STORY 4 co-writer Stephany Folsom will pen the screenplay in addition to executive producing alongside Vaughan and Plan B. It's all happening as a part of Vaughan's multi-year overall deal with Legendary Entertainment, and I couldn't possibly be more excited! Seriously, if you go back in our article history you'll see that I've been hounding Hollywood for a film or television series based on Paper Girls for upward of three years. It's almost as if Legendary and Plan B heard my nerdy prayers loud and clear.

Hailing from enigmatic comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, The Private Eye, The Pride of Baghdad) and artist to the stars Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman, Star Wars), Paper Girls tells an epic tale of time travel gone horribly wrong. In the early hours after Halloween of 1988, four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls uncover the most important story of all time. Before long, the quartet of beyond-their-years adventurers are thrust into a madcap mission to save the world that involves time-altering shenanigans, jive-talking alien beings, kaiju-sized creatures, and coming to terms with who they are and what they become decades into their own respective futures. It's a character-driven drama that's just as emotionally gut-punching as it is fanciful, fearless, and fucked up.

In other Vaughan-related news, the Runaways and Ex Machina creative is also in the midst of serving as an executive producer of FX's upcoming drama series based on Y: The Last Man. Created by Vaughan with artist Pia Guerra, the series “traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival.” Starring in the highly-anticipated production of one of Vaughan's most celebrated works are Diane Lane, Amber Tamblyn, Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield and Marin Ireland. With 60 gorgeous issues to pull inspiration from, FX's Y is poised to be a terrific and timely series for everyone to fight in the comments section over and then some.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love superheroes as much as the next person, though my body is more than ready to welcome more indie comic book properties to the big and small stage. Variety is the spice of life, people, and if it's new and outrageous ideas you want to see, then supporting these bold new projects is a great way to make sure that happens. Trust me, Paper Girls is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Let's chart a course directly for that sucker and break the mold.
