For my money, Michael Bay’s Ambulance is one of the year’s most underrated movies. A throwback thriller that feels like it could have been made in the late nineties, Jake Gyllenhaal has the time of his life playing a bank robber who hijacks an ambulance with his more heroic brother (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) with a paramedic (Eiza González) in-tow. The movie didn’t set the box office on fire domestically, which I think can be chalked up primarily because audiences at the time were wary of returning to theatres. The short window before it hit Peacock likely didn’t help, but now Ambulance is hitting 4K Blu-ray, and this is the perfect chance to catch up with Michael Bay’s best movie in years.

Here’s hoping that the movie’s soft box office performance doesn’t dissuade studios from doubling down on this kind of high-concept, old-school content. It’s funny, but I think it would have done well if Ambulance had been held until the summer. Top Gun: Maverick got a lot of older audiences returning to theatres for the first time since the pandemic began, and now that they’re back in the habit, they might have given Ambulance (or the similarly underrated The Northman) a chance. It’s a trend that I think will pay off handsomely for Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train in August.
