American Gods cancelled by Starz, might wrap up with movie or limited series

Starz has announced that the Neil Gaiman-inspired series American Gods has been cancelled after three seasons – but if you're a fan of the show, there is a silver lining here. The network is in talks with the producers at Fremantle for "a potential event series or movie that would wrap up the story". So the season 3 finale, which aired just last week, won't be the end if Starz and Fremantle can come to an agreement.

Starz released the following statement:

American Gods will not return for a fourth season. Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country."

The decision to cancel American Gods was made due to the declining ratings. Season 2 had 45% less viewers than season 1 did, and season 3 had 65% less viewers than the first season.

American Gods had a bumpy ride from the start, going through four showrunners over the course of its three seasons, with a lot of behind-the-scenes drama between Starz and Fremantle, as well as between cast members and showrunners.

Centered on a conflict between the Old Gods and the New Gods, American Gods has a cast that includes Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Bruce Langley as the Technical Boy, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Yetide Badaki as Bilquis, Mousa Kraish as The Jinn, Omid Abtahi as Salim, and Demore Barnes as Mr. Ibis.
