Anthony & Joe Russo say a Marvel Civil War movie is “highly unlikely”

There are some who believe Marvel might be building towards a movie based on the "Civil War" storyline from their comics, but CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 directors Anthony and Joe Russo don't think it's going to happen. Why? Joe Russo recently told Desde Hollywood it's because Marvel doesn't own the screen rights to many of the characters featured in the series.

It’s complex. There are a lot of characters. Marvel doesn’t have ownership of some of the key players in that. […] I don’t run Marvel so I can’t say that it won’t happen, but I would say that it is highly unlikely.

Marvel could always do a movie version of the story arc with the characters they do own, but I think many fans would rather see it not happen if it isn't going to involve all the major players from the comics.

The duo was also asked about Chris Evans possibly not wanting to play Captain America anymore after he completes his contract with Marvel, and Anthony Russo says, "Chris has always said that he will always do Marvel movies." Russo goes on to say, "There was never an issue in terms of his future in the Marvel franchise," and the actor "is there and very committed to the character."

The Russos then talked a little about CAPTAIN AMERICA 3. According to the directors, they might film a few scenes for the upcoming movie in IMAX, and Anthony Russo says it won't be based on just one comic or storyline.

You can pick and choose the mythology to create a much larger concept. Without giving too much away, it doesn’t mean that it is a single title.

While Anthony Mackie's Falcon probably isn't going to become Captain America anytime soon in the Marvel movies, it does sound like it is at least a possibility, based on Anthony Russo's comments.

In publishing you have decades of storytelling going on. The MCU is much younger […] Whether or not we get to a story bit like that is a little up in the air [The question is] how long will the movies take to get there.

What do you think are Marvel's movie plans for Captain America?

Anthony and Joe Russo will start filming for CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 sometime in April of next year, and it is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2016.
