Antichrist films this summer

While I personally think Lars Von Trier is a pretentious, self-indulgent douche, he makes interesting films. They’re not for everyone – hell, they’re not even really for me – BUT, they’re not run-of-the-mill type stuff (DANCER IN THE DARK, or the haunted hospital drama THE KINGDOM for example). He’s certainly got a bleak mindset, and a very spare visual style, but also a talent for attracting talented actors (check out the cast of his bizarre DOGVILLE) as well as controversy (he hates America, but he’s never been here. Yeah, a douche).

So the fact that he’s taking on a film about Satan is, naturally, interesting. His next film is ANTICHRIST, and while we’ve been hearing talk of it for a while, it’s now finally moving forward. According to the Telegraph, will be shot in Germany and in English this summer. von Trier describes it as a “psychological thriller that evolves into a horror film”. It features one man and one woman, yet to be cast, and deals with the favorite Von Trier topic of cruelty between the sexes: “You have to guess who is the Antichrist,” says its producer, Meta Louise Foldager, mischievously.

Well, no doubt von Trier will attempt to get recognizable actors unafraid to deal with the pressures of making a film with him (some of the actors he’s worked with really detest him). I’ll be keeping an eye on this one, should turn out to be quite the weird little flick…

Click it HERE to read the Telegraph’s interview with the director… Among the revelations: Visitors – and some inmates – have described Von Trier’s production complex, in a former military barracks, as a benign concentration camp. Each morning a black flag is raised to the sounds of military music. Each Friday there is communal hymn-singing. Other arcane rituals include dunking new scripts in a teacup once owned by the director Carl Theodor Dreyer. And urinating on garden gnomes.

Yeah, this guy’s f*ckin’ nuts.
