Area 51 Details

Back at the end of September we told you how PARANORMAL ACTIVITY director Oren Peli’s next flick was set to be AREA 51. Well at the time not much was known about the movie but today Variety posted a few new details!

First up is production for AREA 51 is actually starting soon. Very soon. Next week soon! That’s right, Peli is set to start production on AREA 51 in just a few days. No surprise there with the huge success of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. Strike while the iron is hot right?

AREA 51 will employ the “found footage” narrative structure and tell the story of three teens whose curiosity leads them to the notorious “Area 51” part of Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert. Nice. I don’t know about you guys but I’ve always been pretty intrigued by Area 51. Is there aliens or not? Perhaps we’ll never know… but imagine how cool this flick could be?! Just take a second and think about it… this thing has the potential to be pretty f*cking scary. Word has it PARANORMAL already strikes that chord so it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine AREA 51 following along the same lines. Same type of filming, same group of people … the difference will be the budget. And what a difference it’ll be…

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY’s $11,000 budget is nothing compared to the $5 million budget Peli will be working with this time. Sure that’s still not a lot when it comes to making movies…. but I doubt Peli will even need all of it to make an awesome flick. This funding comes from Aramid Entertainment Fund and Incentive Filmed Entertainment with IM Global handling sales worldwide. Peli will be re-teaming with PARANORMAL producer Jason Blum, who is producing through his Blumhouse Productions banner. When asked about AREA 51, here’s what Peli had to say:

“I’d rather not say anything about ‘Area 51’ except that I am very pleased to be working with the same team who stood by me for the two or three years it took ‘Paranormal Activity’ to get into theaters.”

Alright Peli, we’re going to play ‘that’ game are we? That’s just fine. I’m actually quite alright not knowing what’s going down with AREA 51… keep the lid on that shite until release and we might be in for something great. Keep it here for more on AREA 51 as we hear it.
