UPDATE: Uwe Boll has now responded to the Armie Hammer’s reportedly poor reaction to Citizen Vigilante in an interview with The Wrap. While not addressing whether or not Hammer had any qualms with the film, he did maintain that his working relationship with the actor was excellent, saying “Armie was perfect for the part and I loved working with him. He was prepared and delivered every day on set. We both had a great time working together even if the subject matter of the film is very serious and real.” Boll did not address whether or not Hammer was expected to return for the sequel he’s been teasing online.
Original post: No matter what your thoughts are on Citizen Vigilante, it is impossible to deny that the film has captured a massive audience—all while sparking a fierce storm of controversy and debate. Citizen Vigilante was seen as a comeback vehicle for disgraced actor Armie Hammer, who stars in the leading role. However, a new report suggests that Hammer is experiencing major second thoughts and was completely horrified by the final cut of the project.
Hammer blindsided?
According to a recent report from Puck, Hammer was utterly blindsided when he first watched the completed movie.
“The first time he saw it, he was in tears,” a source from inside the actor’s camp revealed. “He called me and said, ‘F***. This is hateful, disgusting.’“
“I think he knew it certainly leaned toward the right, but Uwe works in a very frantic way,” the source continued. “It’s not like he sent him a hundred-page script. When he saw the final product, he was like, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made,’ and he freaked the f*** out.“
It’s worth noting this report has not been confirmed, although the author, Kim Masters, has a solid entertainment journalism background, having authored several classic books about Hollywood, including “Hit & Run” (about Sony Pictures in the nineties) and “The Keys to the Kingdom” (about Michael Eisner’s Disney reign). One could imagine Uwe Boll, outspoken as always, will address this – and we will update accordingly. Hammer did, however, appear at a Q&A for the film in Los Angeles recently, so it’s not like he’s refusing to promote it.
Will Hammer Return for the Sequel?
With Citizen Vigilante continuing to dominate online discourse, producers are already fast-tracking a sequel. There’s even a video game in the works. However, given Hammer’s apparent thoughts on the film, it remains highly uncertain whether the actor will return.
When Hammer was first offered the role after several years without acting, he said he “would have done a f***ing cat food commercial.” If enough money is on the table for the sequel, it would be hard to turn down.
Banned in Germany?
Citizen Vigilante centers on a wealthy American businessman played by Hammer who transforms into a notorious vigilante targeting violent criminals and corrupt officials in Europe, ultimately becoming both a hunted fugitive and an unlikely media phenomenon. Director Uwe Boll has said that the film is a “very dark and violent movie” which features “rapes and knife attacks” as it examines the “landscape in Europe.“
Boll explained that the film had actually been banned in his native Germany for its extreme violence and alleged anti-migrant message, which naturally made people want to see it even more. “The rating system refused to give us a rating [in Germany], so now you can only watch it if you bring in a Blu-ray from Austria or Switzerland,” Boll said. “And I think they did that on purpose. It was a deliberate censorship decision. I hired a lawyer to complain about it, but we lost in a six-two vote as I was told that the film was inciting violence against migrants.“ Together with Elon Musk, Boll even released the entire film on X, where it streamed for free for 48 hours.
