Today Variety reports that indie auteur and all around interesting filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has inked a first look deal with Universal for his Protozoa Pictures. While tthat’s certainly good news for film fans, what really caught my eye in the article is the following:
Among the projects Protozoa is developing are “Flicker,” an adaptation of Theodore Rozak’s horror novel, for 20th Century Fox.
My curiosity piqued, I tracked down a description of the book, and while it seems like a stretch to call it a horror novel, it certainly sounds like vintage Aronofsky subject matter. If it is truly a horror tale, then all the better.
UCLA film scholar and critic Jonathan Gates becomes obsessed with legendary German expressionist filmmaker Max Castle, who went to Hollywood in the mid-1920s and whose vampire and ghoul B-movies are viewed by cult fans as deeply troubling evocations of evil. On the trail of Castle’s dark past, Gates and his ex-girlfriend, tough-minded film critic Clare Swann, encounter medieval gnostic heresies, secret societies, a teenage genius albino movie producer and an aged Dutch ex-vamp who practices tantric-like sex.
