Ash: Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star in Neill Blomkamp-produced thriller

Trusting people is difficult enough without having to take the word of a perfect stranger in the vastness of space. In Ash, Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and ThunderAnnihilation) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Project PowerLooper) will place their lives in each other’s hands as they investigate the mass murder of a space station crew.

Ash is an upcoming science-fiction thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison. Lotus directs from a script written by German-Brazilian writer Jonni Remmler. The story revolves around a woman (Thomson) who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Gordon-Levitt) comes to investigate the scene, Thompson must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

XYZ Films and GFC Films produce Ash, with Echo Lake and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp executive producing. XYZ Films is bringing Ash to potential buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, where the feature is sure to fetch a fair price.

Beyond presenting an extensive music catalog, Flying Lotus directed 2017’s Kuso, a feature focusing on the aftermath of a Los Angeles earthquake. Co-written by Flying Lotus and David Firth, Kuso stars Hannibal Buress, George Clinton, Firth, Arden Banks, Byron Bowers, and Shane Carpenter. Ash is a big ticket item for Flying Lotus, especially with stars like Thompson and Gordon-Levitt attached. The film should fetch significant money at TIFF, where studios and streaming platforms will be anxious to secure the film for their respective platform.

What do you think about the concept for Ash? Do you think Thompson’s character is somehow responsible for the deaths of her crew, or is Gordon-Levitt’s character doubling back to finish the job he started? Let us know what you think did the deed in the comments.
