The other day myself and just about every other journalist on the net posted a supposed piece of concept art from James Cameron’s AVATAR, showing a neon blue alien hottie who was tipped to be the film’s heroine. Well, since it’s the net, you can never be too sure about what’s true and what’s horseshite, and the image turned out to be the latter – according to JimCam himself! (Yeah that’s right, I’ve assigned him an obnoxious Access Hollywood-ready nickname!)
JimCam wrote Aint It Cool News to set the record straight, flat out denying that the artwork was an accurate representation of what we will see come May 2009.
You recently posted some artwork of a supposed Na’vi character. Don’t know where you got it but it’s spurious. I’ve never seen that piece of art. We had a lot of free-ranging conceptual stuff in the early days of design two and a half years ago, and it might be something that was done then but not shown to me, but it is definitely not remotely our actual character design. Aside from two legs, two arms and a tail, it doesn’t have any features in common with our final designs. If I had to guess I’d say it’s a piece of fan art based on the description of the Na’vi from the old treatment which was leaked twelve years ago. That description is obsolete relative to the shooting script, since things have changed a lot over the years.
To be honest, I’m thrilled this is the case. Not that it wasn’t an interesting design, but it smacked too much of several other creations to really grab my attention. No, this flick will most likely be very well guarded, and I doubt we’ll be seeing many “unauthorized” images or photos this soon into the production (outside of JimCam’s say so).
