With anticipation for Spider-Man: Brand New Day heating up, it’s officially time for Marvel Studios to fire up the hype machine for its next event film, Avengers: Doomsday. Until now, Marvel has kept details about the movie close to the vest, but this weekend at Shanghai Expo, Marvel boss Kevin Feige shared some details that could get fans excited about the biggest MCU movie since Avengers: Endgame.
In addition to debuting official concept art for Avengers: Doomsday (see at the head of the article) featuring a collage of characters from the film revolving around Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, Feige told an eager crowd that Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova plays a significant role in the events to come. He also hinted at Yelena popping up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While it was just a tease, fans are now speculating that Pugh’s character is more than a guest star in the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
“If you’re a fan of Yelena, wait until Avengers Doomsday, Yelena plays a big part in that. But if you don’t want to wait until then, you might see Yelena a little bit sooner in the movies,” Feige said at Shanghai Expo as a way of possibly teasing her Brand New Day role.
After baiting the crowd with more action and quips from Yelena Belova, Feige touched on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s female characters, saying he can’t wait to introduce some of his favorites when the X-Men make their anticipated return to the silver screen.
“Well, Marvel is 90 years old, there are so many great female characters. Some of my favorite female characters are in a group called the X-Men, and the X-Men are coming up very, very soon.”
Finally, Feige commented on managing Doomsday‘s massive cast and ensuring character interactions feel genuine and engaging, saying, “We have a thing at Marvel called Strange Alchemy, putting these characters together that should never really be together. That’s what Marvel’s all about, it’s assembling heroes that might not get along and forcing them to do what’s best for the world. Seeing the X-Men, and the Avengers, and the New Avengers and the Fantastic Four together is a dream I never thought would come true”
While I’ve not been too excited about anything Marvel’s released since Thunderbolts* (it’s one of my all-time favorite MCU films), I’m starting to feel a buzz in the air for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. It’s been years since we got a big-league Marvel event film in theaters, and I want to feel that rush again alongside a riled-up crowd of fans. My theater for Endgame was a hotbed of fans losing their minds during the film, and while I don’t need Doomsday to reach those same heights, it would be cool if the new film could get close. However it shakes out, I want to be entertained and surprised by some of what I see. Expect at lot more to be revealed when Marvel invades Hall H at SDCC in two weeks.
