Awfully Good Movies: Howard the Duck (Video)

Howard the Duck (1986)
Director: Willard Hyuck
Stars: Lea Thompson, Jeffrey Jones, Tim Robbins

Next week, the STAR WARS saga continues with ROGUE ONE, so there's no better time to acknowledge the man who made this series possible, George Lucas, and the movie that began his downward spiral: 1986's HOWARD THE DUCK, starring Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins and Jeffrey Jones! When Lucas produced this adaptation of the cult Marvel comic book, with his AMERICAN GRAFFITI co-writers writing and directing, it seemed like a surefire recipe for success. But instead, HOWARD THE DUCK is now a name synonymous with the term "box office bomb", and when you have to sit through the actual movie, you'll probably agree that it deserves it. Between the unlikable hero, the labored comedy, and the unfocused plot, this movie is truly a "quack-tastrophe" (look, if the filmmakers get to make shitty duck puns, then so do I!). But at least we can look back upon this cinematic turd with relief, knowing that Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones and Howard the Duck are in the hands of Mr. Disney now, where Uncle George can never hurt them again.
