Now here’s something out of the blue…
According to Deadline.com, Warner Bros. wants to move forward with a sequel to Tim Burton’s surreal comedy BEETLEJUICE. David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith – creators of the MTV series “The Hard Times of RJ Berger” – are reportedly in negotiations to write the screenplay for the flick, which Deadline stresses will not be a remake, but a reboot that will “advance the storyline of the original”. Details are nil after that.
Grahame-Smith is, as the kids say, so hot right now. He recently adapted his book, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, for director Timur Bekmambetov and producer Tim Burton, as well as wrote the screenplay for DARK SHADOWS, which of course is currently being directed by Burton. If BEETLEJUICE 2 is necessary, I suppose the author/screenwriter is as good of a choice as any given his recent collaborations with Burton – not to mention his obvious knack for supernatural tales tinged with dark humor .
Honestly, I have no idea how I feel about this. I’m intrigued by the idea, and they’ve certainly found an interesting pair of writers to work on it, but I shudder to think what this movie might look like if it’s botched. Could be a travesty of epic proportions. What do you think?
