After kicking ass and taking names in movies like Ready or NotGuns Akimbo, and Mayhem, Samara Weaving is traveling through time to lay the smackdown on the era of high hair, neon windbreakers, and thrash metal! According to Deadline, Weaving will star in Bella, a 1980s-set action thriller from Larysa Kondracki.

Kondracki directs the feature, with Craig Flores producing through Bread & Circuses Entertainment alongside John Wick’s Chad Stahelski through his 87Eleven banner. Jason Spitz and Alex Young executive produce, with Jesse Wigutow writing based on Jason Markarian’s script.

Set during a 1980s crimewave in New York City, Deadline says Bella is a “hyper-stylized action thriller about a cop’s daughter who, after her father clings to life following an assassination attempt, goes on a rampage to unearth her father’s assassin and weed out deep-rooted corruption in the New York City Police Department.”

Bella cleverly reinvents the female-lead action genre pairing a sexy and unapologetic rock n’ roll edge with the gritty heightened realism of 80’s New York City. Collaborating with Chad Stahelski and 87Eleven whose talent is singular in bringing unparalleled action films to worldwide audiences is a dream for me, Larysa, and Samara,” Flores told Deadline.

If Flores’ name sounds familiar, it’s because he produced 2019’s Crawl, the wickedly entertaining horror film about a young woman attempting to save her father from alligators during a category five hurricane. Horror fans went wild for Crawl when the movie swam into theaters, giving the world another reason never to visit the Sunshine State. Crawl banked $92M against a $14M budget, making it a surprise success at the box office.

Weaving stars in Scream VI alongside Jenna Ortega, Courteney Cox, Melissa Barerra, Hayden Panettiere, Devyn Nekoda, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Skeet Ulrich, Mason Gooding, and more. Weaving recently completed work on Azrael. E.L. Katz directs the action horror film about a world where no one speaks, where a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman who escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to appease an ancient evil deep within the surrounding wilderness.
