Billionaire Boys Club with Kevin Spacey made a measly $126 on opening day

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD may not have been a box office hit but replacing Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer certainly had a positive impact on the movie. The makers of BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB are probably begging for a time machine so they could do the same thing, as the movie featuring a supporting role with Spacey made a measly (and ironic) $126 its opening day, and could have a hard time clearing over $450 for the whole weekend. Even a Depression Era headline would read “Billionaire Boys Bomb!”

The movie starring Taron Egerton and Ansel Elgort was released On Demand at the end of the July but started a limited run this weekend – a VERY limited run. The movie is only playing in eight theaters (per THR) across the country (and not in L.A. or New York), but even with those few theaters $126 is basically nothing. The Saturday gross was about the same at $162, and the Sunday total will probably be even worse.

On average, that’s about $53 per theater for the weekend, which if we expect each movie ticket to cost about roughly $10, that means about five people went to each theater to check out the movie. While Netflix was firing him from HOUSE OF CARDS and Scott was replacing him with Plummer, Vertical Entertainment put out a statement explaining why they were going to release the now tainted project.

"We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior — that were not publicly known when the film was made almost two-and-a-half years ago and from someone who has a small, supporting role in Billionaire Boys Club — does not tarnish the release of the film," Vertical said. "In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film."

We can sit here all day wondering why Vertical even dared to put this movie in theaters and we will never figure out a logical reason. Not only does the movie have Spacey, who is now rat poison to any project he touches, but the movie was already available On Demand, so there's no reason to leave your house to see it. On top of that, people curious about the movie would find the Rotten Tomatoes score at a dismal 13%, and with only eight reviews counted.
