Black Swan expanding; will reach 1,000 theaters by December 22

I still have not seen Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN. Yes, I know, shame on me, but money’s tight during this godforsaken holiday season. The truth is that even if I had made the effort to check it out here in NYC over the past weekend, the chances of me getting a ticket would have been slim. The flick evidently was selling out almost every one of its screenings, an indicator of the gangbuster business it did over its first three days. ($1.4 million in 18 theaters, as we told you HERE.) I know a lot of people are pissed that it’s not in their neck of the woods at the moment, but things are going to change rapidly over the course of the month.

In an article in the Wall Street Journal about the movie’s breakout success, Fox Searchlight executive VP of distribution Sheila DeLoach brings the news that BLACK SWAN will have a roll-out all month; they’ll will add 15 additional markets, and expand to 60-70 theaters, followed by a national release on DECEMBER 22 that will reach some 900 – 1,000 theaters. One can hope that it’ll expand even beyond that in January in a lead up to the Oscars.

The Golden Globe nominations will be announced on DECEMBER 14th, and I expect SWAN to pick up a few nods; Natalie Portman will almost certainly receive a nomination. Aronofsky and the picture itself are pretty strong contenders too. SWAN might see a boost from those, so fret not, my friends who aren’t able to see the film yet! Your time will come!
