Blood Mother: Felicity Jones, Venom writer team for inhuman baby story

Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has signed on to star in and produce Blood Mother, a horror film that’s set up at New Regency. According to Deadline, Jones’ brother Alex Jones will be producing the film with her, as will writers Steve Zissis and Kelly Marcel. Zissis, co-creator of the HBO series Togetherness, wrote the screenplay for Blood Mother, working from a story he and Marcel crafted together. Marcel is best known for her work on Sony’s Marvel Comics adaptation Venom and its recently released sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Zissis and Marcel also shared story credit on the Disney movie Cruella.

Blood Mother sounds like it has the potential to be quite unnerving. The film will center on

an Oxford professor who discovers her baby is inhuman and finds herself doing the unimaginable to keep him alive.

That synopsis also sounds a bit familiar, as movies like Paul Solet’s 2009 film Grace and Josef Rusnak’s disappointing 2009 remake of the 1974 killer baby classic It’s Alive have already done the whole “mother cares for a strange baby” thing. But hopefully this will turn out to be a good new entry in this odd little sub-genre. I assume the title is a pun and this baby prefers drinking blood over drinking milk.

The Deadline report doesn’t include any mention of a director, so we’ll have to wait and see who ends up at the helm of this one. We’ll keep you updated on Blood Mother as it continues to move forward.

While we wait for this movie, I highly recommend that you seek out Grace, which earned a spot on our Top 10 Horror Movie Pregnancies list. You can skip the It’s Alive remake, you wouldn’t be missing much, but definitely check out the original It’s Alive – and if you’re into deadly baby craziness, keep going with the It’s Alive sequels.
