Blumhouse and Dee Rees team up for an untitled horror project

Producer Jason Blum, the man behind the Blumhouse production company, is one of the biggest names in modern horror. Director Dee Rees has earned a lot of critical acclaim with her dramas; her latest film MUDBOUND is even stirring up Oscar buzz. These worlds collided at a Sundance Institute event, where Blum felt compelled to approach Rees and let her know what an emotional impact MUDBOUND had on him. As it turned out, there was mutual appreciation here, as Rees is "a serious horror fan" who applauded at the end of the Blum-produced GET OUT and also counts the Blumhouse productions CREEP and HUSH among her recent favorites.

As the conversation between Blum and Rees went on, the director revealed that she had an idea for a horror story, inspired by her own move to a small town:

You’ve got me and my wife, two black lesbians, and when we first moved in, we fought every day over all these little things: ‘Why is this over there? Did you move that?’ Maybe it was a ghost. Or maybe it was some other force — like us not wanting to be there or fitting in.

The result of that conversation is that Blum is going to produce Rees's next movie, a horror film that will be

centered on the domestic lives of black lesbians in rural America.

Blumhouse had great success with the socially conscious horror of GET OUT, so it will be interesting to see how much of that success the company will be able to replicate with its collaboration with Rees.

It will also be interesting to find out what the title of this film is going to be.
