Blumhouse & Facebook Watch team for new Handless Maiden series

Blumhouse Television has joined forces with Raelle Tucker and Scott Winant (TRUE BLOOD) to produce, a half-hour dramatic series for Facebook Watch with the working title SACRED LIES. It's an inventive twist on the classic Grimms' Brothers tale, The Handless Maiden and the novel, The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly by Stephanie Oakes.

The half-hour, eight-episode series follows the story of Minnow Bly played by Elena Kampouris the handless heroine who escapes a cult and finds herself in juvenile detention, suspected of knowing who killed her cult leader, played by Toby Huss (HALLOWEEN).

Adapted and updated by Raelle Tucker, who will also serve as executive producer and showrunner, Winant is on board to executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

Raelle Tucker:

This is a young female protagonist we’ve never seen on screen before. She’s complex, brave, funny…and sometimes dangerous. And she has no hands. But she refuses to let that, or her bizarre, brutal past define her or limit her. That’s the message of our series: no matter what life throws at you – ultimately only you have the power to decide what you believe and what you become. I’m beyond excited and honored to bring this unique, inspiring, badass character to life.

Also serving as executive producers on behalf of Blumhouse Television are Jason Blum, Marci Wiseman, and Jeremy Gold. Wiseman and Gold on the series:

Raelle and Scott are known for pushing the envelope with complex characters, mixing genres and diving into dramatically dark subjects, which is also a hallmark of Blumhouse storytelling. Sacred Lies is an inventive twist on a time-honored fairytale which we believe will surprise and stir the Facebook Watch audience and we’re excited to be the studio producing this provocative series.

The story of SACRED LIES, originally written by Oakes and adapted to the screen by Tucker, will take viewers on a journey that explores complex, sometimes flawed characters, diving into dramatically dark subjects, whilst unravelling the thrilling mystery of the show's fierce heroine Minnow Bly and her bold resolve to face the demons of her past to give herself a chance at a promising future. The series also stars Kevin Carroll, Kiana Madeira and Ryan Robbins.

Facebook Watch can be viewed on mobile, desktop and Facebook’s TV apps.

I'm not sure if this series aims to be straight horror, but the mixture of Blumhouse with the producers of TRUE BLOOD seems good enough to me. Plus we're talking about The Handless Maiden tale, which is primed for some freaky-ass imagery and themes. I'll be checking out this series once it hits, for sure. How about you?
