Bones and All star Timothée Chalamet reflects on social media’s grasp on the young generation in light of new film

As the Venice Film Festival continues, one of the films featured this year is the horror drama Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell. The film centers around young companions in the 1980s who embark on a journey across the country and share a deep connection due to their unusual hunger for human flesh. Ironically, this film was directed by Luca Guadagnino, who had directed Call Me By Your Name with Chalamet alongside Armie Hammer (who, well, you know…).

The theme of the film explores the youths’ coming to terms with their uncontrollable traits that have no place in society’s norms and question their fiber of being because of it. The nature of judgment and self-acceptance is a very relevant topic for the younger generation of today, and Chalamet addresses how social media inhibits the inner growth of many kids and teens.

According to Deadline, Chalamet had this to say,

To be young now is to be intensely judged. It was a relief to play characters who are wrestling with an internal dilemma absent the ability to go on Reddit or Twitter or Instagram or TikTok and figure out where they fit in. Without casting judgment on that, because if you can find your tribe there, then all the power. But I think it’s tough to be alive now. I think a societal collapse is in the air, it smells like it, and without being pretentious, I hope that’s why these movies matter because that’s the role of the artist is to shine a light on what’s going on.”

Pop culture being influenced by social media has seen many different welcomed and unwelcomed effects. Chalamet’s co-star, Russell, adds that she constantly thinks about the world her little brother has to grow up in, “and the self-judgment and judgment of others and that opinions seem so flooded in your every day in such a drastic and severe way. It’s so scary because the hope is really you can find your own compass within all of it, and that seems like a difficult task now.”

Bones and All will be screening at the Venice Film Festival and has yet to announce a release date.
