Despite some thinking the series might be running out of steam, Variety is reporting that Insidious: Out of the Further is performing strongly at the box office, earning $3 million from Thursday previews. That’s a solid chunk more than WB’s The End of Oak Street managed last week, and it ended up opening to $21 million. As such, Out of the Further should open just slightly ahead of the $20 million we predicted, with a weekend of perhaps $23 million.
That would put it in the same ballpark as several other films in the series. The lowest opening belongs to the first movie, which debuted with $13.2 million in 2011, while the highest belongs to the second, which opened north of $40 million. The last movie, Insidious: The Red Door, opened with $33 million, but it benefited from the return of original franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. This one has a new cast but also a low $18 million budget, meaning it should enjoy a very profitable opening.
Even so, Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t expected to face much competition for first place, with it closing in on $35–40 million in its fourth weekend. The Jason Statham opener Mutiny had a modest preview night, earning $700,000. That’s nearly double what his last movie, Shelter, made from its Thursday previews, with that film eventually opening to $5.53 million. His movie before that, A Working Man, pulled in $1.1 million and opened with $15.5 million, so it seems like an opening in the $10 million range is possible.
Its opening will come with a caveat, as the fact that Amazon leaked the entire film on Prime Video will no doubt eat into its box office, with pirated copies flooding servers. The weekend’s other opener, Spa Weekend, didn’t have Thursday screenings.
