By the end of the weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going to be just $14 million shy of overtaking Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing movie of all time domestically. According to early numbers, the superhero sequel is looking at a $17.25 million weekend, with about $22 million for the four-day Labor Day holiday. By Sunday night, the total gross should be about $922 million, putting it not far from Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million total.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will likely be the runner-up this weekend, with $16.4 million and a $588 million domestic haul. It should pass $600 million by next week. Another big piece of news is that Coyote vs. Acme, which was a surprise number two last weekend, is holding on like a champ, dipping only about 23% to $11.5 million and a $37 million total. Another movie doing great in holdover business is Buddy, the low-budget horror film that’s become an instant cult hit, with it looking like it will actually ADD 9% this weekend for a $5.9 million weekend. It’s a real hit for Roadside Attractions.
New releases aren’t faring as well. The Mark Wahlberg-led By Any Means is looking at a modest $7 million opening, but it’s looking like a blockbuster next to Adam Wingard’s Onslaught, which comes from A24 and is looking at a disastrous $2.3 million over the four-day weekend, with it scoring a terrible C CinemaScore rating. It looks like this one is missing the mark with audiences in a pretty huge way. Lionsgate’s Fall 2: Deadpoint isn’t doing much better, with about $2.7 million. Both movies will be beaten by the re-release of the classic anime Akira, which is on track for a $3.5 million four-day gross.
