Box Office Predictions: Devil Wears Prada & Mortal Kombat to duke it out again

Chris

Last weekend, many predicted Mortal Kombat II would be able to pull off a win against The Devil Wears Prada 2. But, despite being in its second weekend, the 20th Century Studios sequel pulled off a surprise win thanks to a hefty Mother’s Day haul. However, Mortal Kombat II has a shot at dethroning Prada this weekend — even if the chances seem remote, as there’s very little in the way of competition out there.

That said, the smart money is on Prada to pull off a three-peat. I’m guessing it will pull in about $22 million this weekend, while Kombat II is looking at closer to $18 million. It would be higher, but video game adaptations tend to be extremely front-loaded. In fact, I’m thinking Michael is going to pull ahead, with about $20 million this weekend (although there’s also a world where it returns to the top spot).

But what about this week’s new releases?

Frankly, I’m not thinking any of them will make a huge dent. Focus’ Obsession probably has the best shot, with it looking at about $12 million this weekend, which will allow it to pull ahead of The Sheep Detectives, which will fall to fifth place with about $10 million. Guy Ritchie’s In the Grey has a killer cast (Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal), but it’s undergone many delays and is getting a very low-key release from new distributor Black Bear, who haven’t been able to open a movie to substantial numbers yet. I’m expecting it to pop up lower in the top 10 with about $7 million, while Orion’s Is God Is should do something like $3 million, with it being more of a niche release.

Here are my predictions:

  1. The Devil Wears Prada 2: $22 million
  2. Michael: $20 million
  3. Mortal Kombat II: $18 million
  4. Obsession: $12 million
  5. The Sheep Detectives: $10 million
