This weekend should mark the end of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s six-week run at the top of the box office. Instead, Warner Bros. is certain to take the top spot with Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited legacy sequel, with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprising their roles as witchy sisters. Interestingly, the original film wasn’t a huge hit back in 1998, with it only making a grand total of $46 million domestically. Some forecasters believe the movie has a shot at matching that total gross in one weekend, as Bullock has become a powerhouse at the box office.
While some of her biggest films have gone to streaming (like Bird Box), her last two theatrical films opened well, with The Lost City making $30.45 million in the middle of the pandemic and Ocean’s 8 making $41.6 million four years earlier. This is Bullock’s first movie in four years, so audiences should turn out to see her.
I’m thinking a $40 million gross is in line for this one, which would be a solid opening (the early buzz isn’t great, but the original has a solid fanbase). Spider-Man: Brand New Day should be the runner-up with about $10 million, with it possible that by the end of the weekend, it will usurp Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing movie of all time domestically. The Odyssey won’t be far behind with $8 million.
The big question mark this weekend is The Uprising, with the historical action flick starring Andrew Garfield not on track to do much business. The confusing marketing at one point positioned it as a Robin Hood film (which doesn’t accurately reflect the film), and the reviews have been mixed. It could possibly make $4 million. It should lose out to Angel Studios’ Runner, which could make $7 million and beat Coyote vs Acme, which should round out the top 5. There’s also the domestic release of Neon’s South Korean film, Hope, which we loved, but will likely have a hard time cracking the top 5.
