The first box office numbers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day are starting to roll in, and, as expected, it’s proving to be a mammoth hit. Deadline estimated $50 million in early previews, but more stats are rolling in, suggesting the number is much higher. Borys Kit with THR posted on X that his sources say the movie is looking at $70 million. That would wildly outpace the last Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, which made $50 million over its entire opening Thursday. It would easily set an opening night record, with the previous champ being Avengers: Endgame‘s $60 million start.
Earlier this week, we guessed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would make about $280 million, but now it seems like the opening will be even higher – possibly in the $300 million range. In the meantime, another Tom Holland movie, The Odyssey, passed $334 million domestically yesterday, which means it’s now Christopher Nolan’s third-highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office. It only trails The Dark Knight ($534 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448 million), with it expected to easily outpace the latter. In fact, if its box office continues to hold up, it may well outgross The Dark Knight to become Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever. Recently, IMAX announced its 70mm run would be extended until September 16 due to intense demand, with showtimes selling out around the clock.
All things considered, this is expected to be one of the biggest weekends in recent box office memory, with both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey expected to draw huge crowds. Brand New Day also marks a major box office comeback for the MCU, whose recent theatrical run—with the exception of Deadpool & Wolverine—has been middling at best. It bodes well for the upcoming release of Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated to open on December 18.
