Box Office Update: Black Panther tops while The Chosen surprises in second

The second weekend of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is looking to have one of the steeper declines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As of today, it is looking to drop 65% of its first week audience and land around $65 million. While not the worst week to week decline for a marvel film: Thor: Love & Thunder, Black Widow and Spider-Man: No Way Home all dropped 68% in their second weeks, it doesn’t bode well for the longevity of this $250 million budgeted sequel. Is it possible Marvel fatigue has finally set in?

Second place looks to be the faith based The Chosen: Season 3- Episodes 1&2. The Fathom release is looking to grab around $10 million for the weekend. I must admit, I am not a religious person at all, so these faith based movies tend to fly under my radar, but there is obviously a vast audience for them. Even more impressive, this isn’t even a movie! It is the first two episodes of a TV series that is available on Amazon Prime. That kind of gives me hope in the fact that theatrical really isn’t dead if people are willing to shell out $10 million to see two episodes of a TV series on the big screen!

Third place looks to be The Menu with around $8 million. This movie deserves more! If you are on the fence about seeing this one check out our own Chris Bumbray’s near perfect review. For me, this is quite simply one of the best movies of the past few years. Wholly originally, absolutely unexpected and darkly hilarious with pitch perfect performances from all involved. Hopefully good word of mouth can propel this one to a solid box office finish.

Fourth and fifth place are going to Black Adam and Ticket To Paradise. The former with a near 60% decline and an estimated $3.4 million weekend, the latter continuing its impressive run with an additional $2.9 million in its box office till, made even more impressive by the fact that the Julia Roberts/ George Clooney love fest is available on demand in your own home.

As expected She Said is coming in a bit soft with just over $2 million and a sixth place start. As I said in my predictions, I wasn’t sure how many people were really wanting to go see a movie about a topic that has seen endless news coverage over the past few years. However, fans of great acting and Journalism movies in general should find She Said a worthy one to catch in theaters. (Check out Chris Bumbray’s 7/10 review here)
