Box Office Update: Spider-Man: Brand New Day on top as Insidious opens solid and Mutiny struggles

As expected, new releases Insidious: Out of the Further and Mutiny aren’t posing much of a threat to Spider-Man: Brand New Day in its fourth weekend. The superhero sequel is performing right in line with our expectations, with it on track for a weekend gross north of $36 million, which would put its domestic cume at an unreal $852 million. By midweek, it will overtake Avengers: Endgame’s $858 million gross to become the second-highest-grossing movie (domestically) of all time.

Insidious: Out of the Further is poised to take second place, with a solid $23 million gross. That’s a lot less than the last film, Insidious: The Red Door, which opened with $33 million, but that movie brought back original franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. This one has a new cast (although franchise stalwart Lin Shaye returns), so this is a solid result. The Odyssey should come in at third place with $18.5 million and a $538 million domestic cume. Sadly, The End of Oak Street is looking at a steep 62% drop, with it on track for $8 million this weekend. It will be beaten by PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, which is pulling ahead with $8.5 million.

Jason Statham’s action flick, Mutiny, is coming in softer than expected, with it on track for a $7.4 million gross. That’s higher than his last movie, Shelter, which only made $5.5 million. However, the caveat is that the film was leaked by Amazon Prime in its entirety earlier this week, which no doubt cut into its weekend gross, as pirated versions of the film are everywhere online. Black Bear’s Spa Weekend, starring Anna Faris, Leslie Mann, Michelle Buteau and Isla Fisher, isn’t making much of an impact, with it looking at only $3 million, continuing upstart distributor Black Bear’s troubled box office track record.
