Back in May of last year, we gave you the unlikely news that Keanu Reeves was set to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in an updated version of the classic Robert Lewis Stevenson tale. Nicolas Winding Refn was all set to sit in the director’s chair, which would be his follow-up to the very well-regarded BRONSON. In an interview with Empire, however, Refn reveals that he’s no longer attached to the schizophrenic horror tale, the screenplay for which was written by REVOLUTIONARY ROAD scribe Justin Haythe.
“I just couldn’t do it when they needed me… Keanu is a wonderful actor and I’m sure it will be a fantastic film with him in.”
I’m ambivalent when it comes to Refn, since I haven’t seen BRONSON or any of his others films for that matter, but it’s Reeves who intrigues me here. I assume he’s still attached to the project, but can he really pull it off? The guy is hardly convincing in one role, let alone two – and two that require serious emoting, to boot. (Unless you’re convinced “Ted” was came from a deep, introspective place.)
As for Refn, he’s committed to DRIVE, starring Ryan Gosling, about a stuntman by day and robbery getaway driver by night. Now that sounds pretty sweet…
