Many rank Bruce Campbell as one of their all-time favorite actors, thanks to his roles in projects like Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy, Maniac Cop, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Bubba Ho-Tep, My Name Is Bruce, Burn Notice, and many more. Campbell is also a bestselling author whose works include If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way, The Cool Side of My Pillow: A Book of Essays, House Divided: A Political Satire, and Citizen Alex: Let Freedom Ring. (Not to mention the comic books The Hire and Sgt. Rock vs. the Army of the Dead.) My mother, Joanne, loved the Western genre. She read every Zane Grey novel he ever wrote. I know because I drew stick-figure cartoons in the margins of her massive paperback collection.
Westerns, by nature, are riddled with clichés – the steely-eyed, unshaven hero protecting innocent pioneers from brutal, unforgiving savages.
With Reconcile, I tried to sidestep many of the cliché elements we’ve read or seen in Westerns for a generation. Reality isn’t tidy or reliable. Reality has unpleasant circumstances that don’t always resolve themselves like they do in the movies. In the heat of battle, the “good guys” and “bad guys” aren’t so easily defined.
In the sprawling history of the American West, I’d like to think a different kind of story was possible, and I hope you enjoy it.
I don’t need a plot synopsis because if it’s Campbell, I’m reading it.
Since he’s one of the Evil Dead franchise rights holders (along with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert), Campbell will be receiving producing credits on the upcoming films Evil Dead Burn and Evil Dead Wrath, but he has let it be known that he didn’t have much creative involvement with those projects. Instead, he has been focusing on his own stuff, like Reconcile and the comedy film Ernie & Emma, which he wrote and directed. The movie has already had some screenings, and Campbell is planning to go on tour with it this fall.
Campbell recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with a type of cancer that’s “treatable” not “curable.” We’re all rooting for him and wish him the best with his treatment.
