Buffy star Nicholas Brendon gives harsh criticism of Angel’s David Boreanaz and his spinoff

It looks like that tension between Xander Harris and Angel on Buffy The Vampire Slayer may have been rooted in some reality. The hit cult series celebrated its 25th-anniversary last week and with the milestone came the emergence of a new book called “Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts.” Xander actor, Nicholas Brendon, was interviewed by author Evan Ross Katz for the new book and he had some choice words about Buffy spinoff Angel and its star, David Boreanaz.

Brendon spoke with Evan Ross Katz about working Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy’s first three seasons before exiting the series to join Boreanaz on Angel. Brendon spoke highly of Carpenter and said he missed his frequent scene-partner and sometimes love interest once she departed for Angel. Brendon wasn’t nearly as complimentary when speaking about the spinoff itself, saying, “Angel, in my opinion, is worse than those Twilight f-ckers.” You can check out his full quote below!

“It was weird that Angel got a spin-off. Because how does the most boring character in TV history get a spin-off? Why don’t we break down Angel? Uh, no, there’s nothing to break down. It’s just a brooding little guy. Angel, in my opinion, is worse than those Twilight f–ckers. I’m not sure if I’m talking about David or Angel at this point now.”

If you’re a fan of the show and its history, past and present, you might be aware that Brendon and Boreanaz are not the best of friends, something Katz points to. Friction between the two actors is alluded to, specifically Boreanaz not wanting to participate in a group photoshoot for Entertainment Weekly for the show’s 20th anniversary if Brendon were to be present. Brendon was, allegedly, photoshopped into the photo at a later time. While there has never been an exact reason given about the rift, most fans think it has to do with Brendon’s personal life since the show ended its run. The actor has had several run-ins with the law, most recently being busted for prescription drug fraud in August of last year. Brendon has also been at the center of domestic abuse incidents with a girlfriend.

Brendon’s comments come off a bit petty and even hint at a bit of jealousy. Boreanaz has remained a staple on television since Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997. The actor spent three seasons on Buffy before following that up with five seasons on Angel. He then went on to do 12 seasons of the hit series Bones and now he’s currently in his fifth season of SEAL Team. Nicholas Brendon hasn’t nearly matched that success and maybe that’s a bitter pill to swallow.
