Bardem and Cruz
Acting power couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz reunite in the new psychological thriller Bunker. The two have starred together in films like Jamón Jamón and Vicky Christina Barcelona. The film blurs the line between fantasy and reality as it explores the nature of marriage with a couple who has been together for 17 years, which mirrors Bardem and Cruz’s personal lives as a married couple. Bunker is written and directed by Academy Award-winner Florian Zeller, whose resume includes The Father.
Bunker
Sony Pictures Classics has just released the ominous new trailer for Bunker. Joining Bardem and Cruz is a cast that includes Stephen Graham, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Paul Dano.
The plot description reads, “Miguel, a successful London architect, considers a prestigious offer to build a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire. This project causes his wife, Sofia, to question their relationship of 17 years as they are drawn deeper into a life of extreme wealth, paranoia, and fear. The intrusion of an unsettling neighbor becomes yet another source of anxiety. Bunker is a psychological thriller that examines the emotional and moral challenges faced by a couple in an increasingly uncertain world.”
Zeller’s Vision
Zeller has stated that he wrote the script with Bardem and Cruz in mind, using their real-life marriage as inspiration. The director said, “I wanted to tell the story of a marriage and was deeply compelled to work with a real-life couple. I immediately was drawn to the idea of working with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, two of the most gifted actors working today, who also happen to be one of the most iconic couples. I wrote Bunker for them. This film will push the boundaries of narrative and emotional truth, blurring the lines between reality and fiction in a way that feels thrilling and deeply human.”
FilmNation Entertainment handled international sales for Blue Morning Pictures and MOD Producciones at the Cannes Market. Meanwhile, CAA Media Finance and WME Independent were in charge of the domestic rights. Sony Pictures Classic distributes along with the participation of many production companies, including Netflix. Blue Morning Pictures’ Federica Sainte-Rose, who produced the film, stated, “What excites me most about working with Florian on Bunker is the bold new direction he’s taking as a filmmaker. This project marks a clear tonal shift — unsettling and cinematically daring, Bunker speaks to the glaring contradictions that exist in modern society. The exploration of fears of the future, from ecological threats to rising social inequality, makes this film both urgent and relevant.”
Bunker releases December 11, 2026, in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide across the US on January 15, 2027.
