The next exhilarating chapter of Activision‘s Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, explodes onto PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on October 23. Today, the studio shared a fresh campaign trailer, offering fans a deeper look at the high-stakes narrative and a major celebrity reveal sure to turn heads.
If you watch the promo to the end, you’ll catch a chilling glimpse of Mads Mikkelsen, who, according to leakers, stars as the main antagonist, Archer. Warning Captain Price that he’ll “make you cry for mercy when everything and everyone you care for dies,” Mikkelsen joins a long legacy of iconic Hollywood talent in Call of Duty, including Gary Oldman, Kit Harington, and Idris Elba. It isn’t the Danish actor’s first dive into gaming either, having previously reprised his role as Le Chiffre for Quantum of Solace and portrayed Cliff Unger in Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding.
Modern Warfare 4’s campaign features a split-narrative structure that pushes the franchise’s story into treacherous new territory. One thread centers on a full-scale invasion of South Korea. Players step into the combat boots of South Korean Private Park Hyun Jun as joint U.S. and Republic of Korea (ROK) forces engage in relentless, claustrophobic ground combat, amphibious drops, and urban defense across the peninsula.
On the other side of the globe, players follow former Task Force 141 commander John Price. On the run after assassinating General Shepherd in retaliation for John “Soap” MacTavish’s tragic death in Modern Warfare III, Price is now an outlaw operating entirely outside official military channels. As former allies like Ghost are tasked with hunting him down, Price wages a desperate, rogue war to stop Makarov and prevent Archer’s mysterious weapon of mass destruction from triggering global ruin.
Infinity Ward has noted that Modern Warfare 4 will serve as the definitive conclusion to the rebooted saga that began in 2019. What a more permanent ending means for the long-term future of Task Force 141 and the broader franchise remains anyone’s guess.
