The news comes from iFMagazine and that’s the good news! Actually… the fact that Carpenter (right) is back in the director’s chair is the best news your going to get in this story. For one, Carpenter’s next adventure won’t be a ‘horror’ flick. It’s actually more along the lines of a prison/action flick.
They’ve even announced a star for the project already.. and that man is Nicolas Cage. Now don’t get me wrong… I’m actually a huge fan of Nic Cage. I think most of his flicks are nothing short of great… but lately he’s been on a downward spiral. LORD OF WAR and WEATHER MAN were the last Nic Cage flicks I found to be pretty damn good.
So Nicolas Cage starring in John Carpenter’s next directing effort. I’m sure most will probably see this as horrible, horrible news… I see this as insane potential. One of my fave actors and one of my fave directors … Oh I’m game. Only thing to top this would be if it was a horror flick and Mila Kunis was starring as well.
So now that that’s out of the way, let me give you the run down on this new flick… perhaps starting with the title: SCARED STRAIGHT. No, it’s still not a horror flick. It’s described as a ‘kids in prison’ flick with Nu Image/Millennium Films producing. Back in 2006 it was over at New Line Cinemas with Rob Cohen game to direct.
Well now it’s at Nu Image/Millennium and John Carpenter has the reigns. The synopsis reads: A group of juvenile delinquents are trapped inside a prison as part of the “Scared Straight” program when a large-scale riot breaks out, and it is up to inmate Karl Rix (Cage) to save the kids.
I’m hoping for some vintage Carpenter with a SNAKE EYES type of Cage. Fingers crossed. Production is set to start this fall.
