Cast assembles for Momo Challenge movie Getaway

Last year, word started spreading around social media about a "worldwide phenomenon" that wasn't actually a worldwide phenomenon – the Momo Challenge. This was

an internet hoax about nonexistent social media challenge that claimed to drive users to commit dangerous and harmful acts.

The Momo Challenge may not have been all it was made out to be, but that isn't stopping director Lilton Stewart III from making a horror film about the concept.

Stef Beaton, Alex Brown, Georgie Storm Waite, Rianne Senining, and Charlotte Spencer have signed on to star in Stewart's GETAWAY, which will tell the story of

a group of unsuspecting teenagers who, in their last summer before college, find themselves in a secluded cabin in the woods where unusual occurrences unfold. In ghost story fashion, one tells the story of the urban legend, MOMO, a strange spirit of a bird-like woman that taunts its victims with specific personal details and violent commands via text message and phone calls. What starts out as a harmless prank soon turns more sinister over the next 24 hours as the teens start disappearing without any motive or pattern.

Discussions of the Momo Challenge were often accompanied by images of Momo herself, which was actually a sculpture created by Keisuke Aisawa of the special effects company Link Factory. Aisawa was baffled when his creation became the face of the hoax.

The synopsis for GETAWAY mentions that the film's Momo will be a "bird-like woman" like Aisawa's sculpture depicted, but the announcement doesn't mention whether or not Aisawa will be involved with the film.
