Cate Blanchett and Selena Gomez to star alongside Michael Fassbender in Brady Corbet’s “X-rated” epic

Cate Blanchett, who’s busy speaking truth at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, let it slip that she’s joining the cast of Brady Corbet’s (The Brutalist) next “X-rated” feature, rumored to be titled The Origin of the World. The film already stars Michael Fassbender, though in addition to “Fassy,” Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) is also joining the cast.

What is Corbet’s next feature?

Blanchett said she’s “about to work with Brady Corbet on a film” during a masterclass at Cannes. Plot details remain a mystery. However, Corbet previously said he wants to make an X-rated feature set in the ’70s. “The film spans from the 19th century into the present day — it’s just predominantly focused on the ’70s. The film is really, really genre-defying,” Corbet told The Hollywood Reporter. He also plans to shoot the picture using rare eight-perf 65mm cameras. Andrew Morrison is producing via his Kaplan Morrison studio.

Corbet’s 2024 psychological drama, The Brutalist, won three Oscars at the 97th Academy Awards, including the prizes for Best Actor in a Leading Role: Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography: Lol Crawley, and Best Original Score: Daniel Blumberg. The film earned 10 Oscar nominations that year.

What else do Blanchett and Gomez have cooking?

Cate Blanchett has three film projects in post-production, including How to Train Your Dragon 2, Sweetsick, and Alpha Gang. Alice Birch’s Sweetsick focuses on a mercurial woman with a strange and piercing gift – the ability to see what others most intimately need, often at great personal cost – who sets out on a journey home. Meanwhile, Alpha Gang, from David Zellner and Nathan Zellner, tells the story of an alien gang leader, Alpha One, and her crew, who disguise themselves as 1950s bikers to invade Earth. Their conquest plan derails when they experience human emotions, complicating their mission. Alpha One also stars Adria Arjona, Dave Bautista, Riley Keough, Chris Pine, Léa Seydoux, and Lily Rose-Depp, among others.

Selena Gomez has multiple projects in pre-production, including a Linda Ronstadt biopic from David O. Russell. Gomez plays Ronstadt in the upcoming documentary, focusing on Ronstadt’s career, which spanned genres from country to rock ‘n’ roll and Latin music, leaving an indelible mark on the industry over several decades with her unparalleled talents and contributions.
