While Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka sequel is still developing its recipe for a delicious follow-up to Paul King’s 2013 musical adventure, Netflix is ready to unwrap details about its upcoming animated feature, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory! The new film, courtesy of Netflix Animation Studios, will release globally in theaters on November 5, 2027, and on Netflix on December 22, 2027.
A New Recipe for Roald Dahl’s Classic World
In addition to announcing the anticipated animated feature’s release date, Netflix revealed the project’s star-studded cast, led by Heartstopper and Elden Ring star Kit Connor, with Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka. The newly announced cast members include Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton, The Magic Faraway Tree), Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton, ONE PIECE), Samson Kayo (F1: The Movie, Bloods), Christopher Chung (Slow Horses, My Brilliant Career), with Kate Winslet (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and Helena Bonham Carter (One Life, Nolly).
Wonka Behind Bars and a Heist in the Works
In Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the Golden Ticket contest behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley, a reimagined version of Charlie Bucket (Connor), and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of “rotten” kids plot to break into the factory, nab a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. But like many before them who enter the fantastical world of the factory, these kids are in for a bit more than they can chew.
Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie, Green Eggs and Ham) and Elaine Bogan (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, Spirit Untamed) direct the upcoming film, based on a screenplay by Waititi and inspired by the works of Roald Dahl.
Wait! Is Charlie a villainous ringleader in Waititi’s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory? That’s an odd approach to the source material, but I must admit I’m intrigued. I positively love the preview art Netflix debuted today (check out the image below), and can’t wait to learn more about this exciting project. The cast is positively stacked, and I’ll take any excuse to return to the weird and wacky world of Willy Wonka and his mysterious chocolate factory!
