Christian Bale looks like a man out of time in new Hostiles image

Christian Bale’s dedication to every role he plays ensures that whether he’s playing a crime fighting vigilante or a 19th-century rancher he always looks as immersed in the role as possible. The same can now be said for his work in the new movie HOSTILES, in which he plays army captain Joseph J. Blocker who is tasked with bringing a Cheyenne war chief and his family back to their tribal land.  A new image dropped for the movie and needless to say Bale looks like he belongs in one of those old-timey photographs, standing among a battalion of Civil War soldiers.

Take a look!

Here is the official plot synopsis for the movie:

Set in 1892, Hostiles tells the story of a legendary Army Captain (Christian Bale) who, after stern resistance, reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back home to tribal lands. Making the harrowing and perilous journey from New Mexico to the grasslands of Montana, the former rivals encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was murdered on the plains. Together, they must join forces to overcome the punishing landscape, hostile Comanche, and vicious outliers they encounter along the way.

Directed by Scott Cooper (CRAZY HEART, OUT OF THE FURNACE, BLACK MASS), the movie is set to debut at TIFF next month, and along with Bale, Studi and Pike stars Jesse Plemons, Adam Beach and Ben Foster. Yes, there is 3:10 TO YUMA reunion between Bale and Foster, and hopefully, there will be just as much magic here.

Usually when a new image drops that means a trailer can be expected soon after, and if that’s not the case here then perhaps we can expect one next month when it hits TIFF. There’s no planned release date yet, but if all goes well at the festival then perhaps they will sneak it into the fall lineup so it can compete for the coveted Oscar gold. I wasn’t a huge fan of OUT OF THE FURNACE, but between that, CRAZY HEART and BLACK MASS Cooper has proved himself able to get tremendous performances out of his cast – especially the leading man. Hopefully the same goes for HOSTILES, which will make it a must see for the acting alone. And the facial hair. There will be much facial hair.

Stay tuned for our review of the film out of TIFF!
